When someone dies, the lives of those left behind are thrown into turmoil. Bereavement can be very upsetting and confusing, and after only a very short time banks will want to freeze accounts, bills will need to be paid and there may be assets that are due to go to other people under the direction of the Will. And if there isn’t a Will, you may find there are many more issues you hadn’t considered.

We at MHD Law have many years experience of dealing with the estates of those who have passed away, both those who leave Wills and those having passed without a Will (known as Intestacy). We can explain what needs to be done immediately following a death and we can even arrange the funeral or assist with making funds available.

We will complete the forms that are required, will deal with HM Revenue and Customs for any tax that might arise, we will lodge and process all Court papers and will distribute items under the terms of the Will or under intestacy rules. We will keep you abreast at every step so as to give you peace of mind. We can also help you make any decisions about the possibility of varying an estate (such as a Deed of Family Arrangement or Deed of Variation).

The timescale involved in winding up an estate is difficult to predict as it can vary depending on the individual. It is likely to take anything from six months to a year to finalise everything, but sometimes this can be shorter or longer.
